1880-1938. German Expressionist artist, a
leading member of the group Die Brucke in
Dresden from 1905 and in Berlin from 1911. He
suffered a breakdown during World War I and
settled in Switzerland, where he committed
suicide. His Dresden work, which includes
woodcuts, shows the influence of African art.
In Berlin he turned to city scenes and
portraits, using lurid colours and bold
diagonal paint strokes recalling woodcut
technique.
