  1. 1880-1938. German Expressionist artist, a
  2. leading member of the group Die Brucke in
  3. Dresden from 1905 and in Berlin from 1911. He
  4. suffered a breakdown during World War I and
  5. settled in Switzerland, where he committed
  6. suicide. His Dresden work, which includes
  7. woodcuts, shows the influence of African art.
  8. In Berlin he turned to city scenes and
  9. portraits, using lurid colours and bold
  10. diagonal paint strokes recalling woodcut
  11. technique.
